Docketlane is a drafting tool, not tax or legal advice.

The right invoice wording depends first on GST registration. This guide explains the core Australian Tax Invoice fields and the higher-value buyer-detail rule; Docketlane's separate invoice generator applies those checks before client-ready PDF download.

What is an Australian Tax Invoice?

A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered seller and must make the supplier, supplies, taxable extent, date, GST and total clear. Sales of A$1,000 or more also need the buyer identity or ABN.

The generator checks these core fields before download, but your business remains responsible for the transaction details and should seek professional advice for unusual supplies.

What the ATO requires on a tax invoice

  • The words Tax Invoice clearly stated
  • Your business name and ABN
  • Date the invoice was issued
  • Buyer identity or ABN when the total is A$1,000 or more
  • A brief description of items sold, with quantities and price
  • GST amount payable or a statement that the price includes GST
  • Total amount payable

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this generator free to use?
Yes. You can create, validate, preview and download a client-ready PDF with a small Docketlane footer without signing up, while the current browser keeps a local draft. A Free account adds reusable clients, business defaults, 3 active Draft or Issued quote slots and 3 current cloud invoice slots. Closed quote history does not consume an active quote slot, and only a Draft quote can be deleted.
Does it include GST automatically?
If you confirm that the supplier is GST-registered, the generator uses 10% GST and supports inclusive prices plus taxable, GST-free, input-taxed and export lines.
Do I need to be GST-registered to issue an invoice?
No. If you are not GST-registered, issue a regular invoice and do not add GST. Registration is generally required once GST turnover reaches A$75,000, with different rules for some activities and entities.
Can I add my ABN and logo?
Yes. Both are supported in the business details section and appear on the final PDF.
